VO2 Max Testing

Testing & Optimisation

VO2 Max Testing.

The gold-standard assessment of your cycling or running fitness capacity.

If you are training toward a performance goal, a VO2 max test shows how hard you should train at each intensity based on your own physiology—not generic heart-rate formulas or online calculators.

Your results provide accurate training zones and a clearer picture of your current aerobic capacity, helping you and your coach make more informed training decisions.

Why it matters.

Your Physiology

Know your capacity.

Measure your true VO2 max and understand your current aerobic fitness capacity through direct analysis of oxygen consumption.

Your Thresholds

Train with precision.

Identify your first and second physiological thresholds, including the transition points between easy, moderate and high-intensity training.

Your Training

Remove the guesswork.

Receive individual heart-rate and power or pace zones that reflect your current fitness—not broad population averages.

What We Measure

A detailed picture of how your body performs.

A VO2 max test measures your respiratory and metabolic response across progressively increasing exercise intensities.

This allows us to identify the physiological markers that matter most when prescribing endurance training.

  • Fat Max—the intensity where you burn the highest percentage of fat as fuel.
  • Your first and second physiological thresholds.
  • Your true VO2 max.
  • Individual heart-rate and cycling power or running pace zones.
  • Clear boundaries between easy, moderate and hard training.
  • A practical roadmap for improving your training prescription.

Who it is for.

Structured Training

Committed athletes.

Suitable for athletes already following a structured program who want more accurate intensity targets and objective performance data.

Event Preparation

Cyclists and runners.

Ideal for cyclists, runners and endurance athletes preparing for an event, targeting a personal best or beginning a new training block.

Performance Goals

Anyone seeking clarity.

Appropriate for healthy individuals who want reliable training zones and can complete the required pre-screening process.

Frequently asked questions.

The Assessment

What is VO2 max testing?

VO2 max testing directly measures your aerobic fitness capacity.

It is regarded as the gold-standard measurement of an individual's aerobic fitness capacity. The assessment analyses how much oxygen your body consumes as exercise intensity progressively increases.

Rather than estimating fitness from a formula, the test measures your individual respiratory response to exercise.

The Purpose

Why complete a VO2 max test?

The test shows your current fitness level and identifies the intensities that should guide your training.

Your results determine the points where exercise transitions from lower intensity into moderate and high-intensity work. The test also identifies the intensity where you burn the greatest proportion of fat as a fuel source.

This supports training prescription that follows scientific best practice while remaining specific to your current physiology, fitness level and performance goals.

VO2 max and lactate testing are among the most precise practical methods available for determining individual training thresholds and zones.

The Process

What is involved?

You complete a graded exercise test that becomes progressively harder over approximately 15 to 25 minutes.

During the assessment, you wear a specialised mask that measures oxygen consumption and carbon-dioxide production breath by breath.

The data is analysed throughout the test to identify your individual respiratory and metabolic responses at each exercise intensity.

Direct respiratory analysis can reduce some of the sampling and instrument variability associated with blood-lactate testing, while providing detailed information about your aerobic system.

Preparation

What equipment do I need?

Bring the equipment you would normally use during a quality cycling or running session.

  • Cycling or running clothing and appropriate shoes.
  • A chest-strap heart-rate monitor.
  • A towel and water bottle.
  • Your own bicycle for a cycling test, if preferred.

Exercise Institute also has a scientific-grade treadmill and standalone bicycles available for testing.

Eligibility

Can anyone complete the test?

The test is suitable for a broad range of healthy individuals.

You can complete a VO2 max test provided you are healthy and successfully complete the required pre-screening form.

The assessment can be adapted to your chosen exercise mode and current performance level.
