What is 3D Bike Fit & Efficiency testing?

The 3-dimensional bike fitting process is best outlined here (link to the above page: 3D bike fitting). Efficiency testing allows for measurement of metabolism in different positions on the bike. For instance, when cycling at a power output of 150 watts an individual may consume around 2 litres of oxygen per minute. Once the same individual has been fitted correctly to their bike (based on their own functional assessment pre-fitting) we may see the oxygen cost reduced to 1.9 litres of oxygen per minute. Hence, they are able to produce the same amount of power at a lower metabolic cost. The efficiency test brings an objective measurement to a traditionally subjective bike fitting process. Several of the World Tour teams are now utilising this technology to further the performance of their subjects.

Why do Efficiency Testing?

Efficiency testing brings objective measurement to a subjective process of bike fitting. This way we can measure the actual change, and improvement, in power output for a given oxygen consumption rate (metabolism). It allows for perceptual and objective measures to be considered when fitting an individual.

What is involved?

The test can take around 2-2.5hrs to complete. Once the functional assessments are completed, we take a baseline measure of oxygen consumption at a given power output, then fit the individual to a position based on the functional assessments, before remeasuring their oxygen consumption post fit. Adjustments are made based on client feedback and the efficiency data collected. The process is quite involved and will require the use of a mask to measure gas exchange.

The standard bike fit & efficiency testing is for a 2.5 hour duration, owing to intricacies pertaining to different bike designs and adjusting them, fitting occurring beyond the 2.5 hour duration is charged at an additional hourly rate.

Yes, anyone can do a 3D bike fitting assessment: Road, Mountain, Time Trial, Flat bar, Cyclocross and other types of bikes can be fitted.
