Pace Testing

Testing & Optimisation

Pace testing in Perth.

Understand your aerobic running capacity and establish practical training intensities through a progressive treadmill-based pace test.

Exercise Institute Pace Testing is designed for athletes who want a clearer understanding of how long they can sustain increasing exercise intensity. The results provide an objective foundation for prescribing high-intensity training and understanding performance capability across a range of running durations.

Turn running pace into useful training data.

Aerobic Capacity

Understand your endurance.

Measure your ability to sustain progressively increasing running speeds and better understand the contribution of your aerobic energy system.

Prescription

Train at the right intensity.

Use your test results to prescribe running intensities more accurately, including the pace required to produce a VO2 max training response during high-intensity sessions.

Prediction

Clarify your capability.

Build a clearer picture of your current fitness output and expected performance capacity across efforts ranging from approximately three minutes through to three hours.

The Test

Progressively faster until voluntary exhaustion.

Pace Testing is completed on the Exercise Institute treadmill. The test uses a graded running protocol in which speed increases over time until you reach voluntary exhaustion.

You will run at a set pace for stages lasting approximately two to five minutes. At the end of each stage, the treadmill speed increases. This continues until you are no longer able to maintain the required pace.

  • Approximately 30 minutes to complete, depending on fitness level.
  • Progressive treadmill stages lasting approximately two to five minutes.
  • Running speed increases at the completion of each stage.
  • The test continues until voluntary exhaustion.
  • Results can support training prescription and performance prediction.

The Pace Test provides a low-cost way to understand your current aerobic running output and establish useful intensity targets for training.

Your results can be used to improve exercise prescription and provide insight into your performance capability across different running durations.

Who is pace testing for?

Pace Testing is useful for athletes currently in training who want to understand their aerobic fitness, improve the accuracy of their sessions or establish objective running benchmarks.

Endurance Athletes

Assess aerobic fitness.

Establish a clearer picture of your ability to sustain increasing exercise intensity and identify a useful benchmark for future training.

Structured Training

Improve session accuracy.

Replace broad pace estimates with individualised intensity information that can be applied to high-intensity and aerobic development sessions.

Performance Tracking

Measure development.

Use repeat testing to compare fitness over time and determine whether your training is producing the intended aerobic adaptation.
